The New New Establishment

The New New Establishment

We have been waiting a long time to see those pictures in Vanity Fair magazine.

Sorry, did you say something about Suri Cruise?

We were talking about Steve Cohen. And Steve Schwarzman.

In its October issue, Vanity Fair sets out the latest installment of its “New Establishment” list, which claims to rank the people who most influence the culture through their wealth, power, vision and other, even fuzzier factors.

Remarkably, this list — which Vanity Fair introduced in 1994 — has long ignored the financial sector and its many machers, while devoting much of its admiration to players in the media and entertainment industries.

This year, that changed. Vanity Fair has doubled the size of its list (to 100 from 50) and expanded its scope “beyond the entertainment-information-technology nexus of past years,” according to its introduction to the article. The result: A crowd of financiers and investors have gained prominent spots on the list.

Mr. Cohen, who runs the giant hedge fund SAC Capital, makes his debut at No. 29. The magazine credits his fund’s positions in a “mind-boggling number of stocks” and his estimated earnings of more than $1 billion in each of the past two years. It also mentions his mansions in Delray Beach, Fla., and Greenwich, Conn. (A jaw-dropping photograph of the latter was featured in a Vanity Fair article earlier this year.)

Sharing the No. 34 spot are Blackstone Group’s Pete Peterson and Mr. Schwarzman. Both are newcomers to the “New Establishment” rankings, although the magazine acknowledges how their firm enjoys a quasi-legendary status on Wall Street. “It is hard to overstate the power of the Blackstone Group,” Vanity Fair writes, going on to describe the array of companies in the firm’s portfolio and the record-setting $15.6 billion fund that it recently raised.

Not far below is Lazard chief Bruce Wasserstein, at No. 38. The magazine writes that Mr. Wasserstein’s firm is “on a tear” after a troubled initial public offering — and it also indulges in a minor dig at one of Mr. Wasserstein’s investments, New York magazine. “The publication seems to be returning to its former glory, winning two National Magazine Awards,” it writes. “Too bad the magazine is said to be losing money.” Vanity Fair also pointedly notes that Mr. Wasserstein’s son, Ben, is on New York’s masthead as associate editor.

Bernard Arnault and Francois Pinault, rival French financiers whose holding companies regularly buy and sell an array of luxury brands, appeared on the list for the first time at No. 19 and No. 26, respectively.

Other notable newcomers from the financial sphere include Roman Abramovich of Millhouse Capital, described as Russia’s richest citizen (No. 50); Edward Lampert of ESL Investments, who merged Kmart and Sears (No. 51); Vivi Nevo of NV Investments, a myterious investor said to hold large stakes in Time Warner (Vanity Fair likens him to Austin Powers), Goldman Sachs and other big names (No. 61); and Steven Rattner of private equity boutique Quadrangle Group (No. 99).

Wall Street may finally be getting its due, but we would suggest the list still has some notable omissions. Where is Henry Kravis of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, a pioneer of the buyout business whose firm has billions of dollars to deploy? And, considering the list’s media focus, why didn’t Jonathan Nelson, chief of Providence Equity Partners, which focuses on media and telecom investments, make the cut?

There is always next year.

(New Establishment)

杂志盛赞他的基金管理着“令人惊叹的多的股票”(his fund’s positions in a “mind-boggling number of stocks” ),他在过去两年中每年预期收益均超过10亿美元。
