So you want to buy a Laptop for School

If you are a student in high school or college, a laptop can be a veryuseful piece of hardware. You can take your notes, manage yourschedule, stay in contact with friends and family, wherever you want.This mobility can be very empowering.

Buying a new laptop can be a very difficult task. Who manufacturesthe best laptop? How much RAM should the laptop have? What should itsscreen size be? Is a sixty gigabyte hard drive big enough? Will it beable to play video games? Even for the technically inclined, it can bea difficult task deciphering all this technobabble.

For students, a sturdy laptop is a must. It will be dropped, bumped,and scratched over its lifetime. Because you don't want it to breakeasily you should go with a laptop manufacture that is known for sturdylaptops. Both the IBM Thinkpad and the various Apple laptops are knownas being very sturdy and able to stand up to the daily dangers of everyday life.

It must also be lightweight if you want to take it from class to class without it weighing you down. Laptops that are light weight areknows as "light" or "ultra-light" laptops.

Hard drive space is very important for students. You will need theroom for your notes, projects, and pictures. An eighty gigabyte harddrive (or larger) would fit these requirements. You will also want itto be at least 7200 RPM. A 7200 RPM hard drive allows for faster accessto your data, resulting in a faster, more enjoyable experience.

Two gigabytes of RAM is what you are aiming for. With two gigabytesof RAM, Windows Vista will run smoothly, along with any otherapplications you may decide to run on it. If you want to save money,you can go down to one gigabyte of RAM, but don't go any lower. Anyless then one gigabyte of RAM and the computer will be come very slow,to the point where it is almost unusable.

Processor speed now is not a problem. Any Core Duo or Core 2 Duowill run all your programs smoothly. Because you want to be able to runyour laptop without having to plug it in every hour or two, you willprobably want to get a low voltage processor. When you are buying yourlaptop, look to see the processor you are getting is low voltage ornot.

If you want a thin laptop then buying a laptop without a CD drivemay be a good idea. CD drives can use up a lot of your laptop's batteryvery quickly. On the other hand, if you will need a CD drive or a DVDdrive built into your laptop, try to get one with a fast speed(indicated by the "x" followed by a number on the drive. The higher thenumber, the faster the drive).

You will want to get an integrated graphics card with your laptop.Integrated graphics cards use less energy, run quieter, and cooler thenvideo cards. Integrated video cards have one disadvantage, they are notas powerful as video cards. You will not be able to play the latestvideo games at the highest settings like you would be able to with avideo card.

The screen size varies from person to person. Some people don't mind to have a smaller screen if it means that the laptop will be lighterand more portable. Others want their laptop to have the biggest screenthey can get, at the cost of portability. For students, a smaller,lighter screen would be reccomended.

Do you want a PC, or an Apple? This is some thing that you shouldask your school. If you are going to an art or film school, there is agood chance that the school would recommend or even require your to usean Apple. If you are going any where else, the school will probablyallow either.

Whatever laptop you decide to buy, buy it wisely. A laptop can be anexpensive purchase, but if done with care, the use you get out of itwill be more then worth it.
