Movements in stock and oil prices had been closely intertwined in recent weeks, but equities managed to escape oil\\\'s shadow on Wednesday and move higher in late trading despite a higher close for crude.
Crude futures opened weaker as investors booked some profits and began to wonder if the commodity\\\'s recent surge is beginning to cause a dampening of demand. But oil rebounded as the day wore on. Crude contracts finished up $2.18, or 1.7%, at $131.03 a barrel in New York, boosted by concerns about Nigerian supply as rebels there continued their attacks on oil installations.
